fArt tArtz: Celebrates the Opening of its Second Outlet at Fook Hai Building

fArt tArtz (Fook Hai Building)...

Still remember the dainty café at Expo that serves their food in a jar? Rejoice as fArt tArtz have opened their second outlet in Fook Hai Building which is situated in the cultural district of Chinatown. It is now more convenient and accessible for people who are not staying in the East to visit them. Also, office people working around Chinatown can get to enjoy a wide range of unique pastas, flatbread burgers, flower potted desserts and jar tarts at fArt tArtz.

Retaining the same floral and pastel theme as the first outlet, this new outlet, however, is much cosier and houses two storeys high. To celebrate the opening of their second outlet, fArt tArtz has also introduced some new dishes into their menu and I’ll be sharing them with you in this blog post.

These are some of the new dishes in fArt tArtz's menu, featuring Baguette Balls, Butter Bunny, Fishy Salmon M&C, Fresh Watermelon Freeze and Lychee Lemongrass Freeze.

An ice, cold and refreshing drink is needed especially during this insanely hot period in Singapore!

Fresh Watermelon Freeze // $8 for Small & $15.90 for Large

They are very generous in the amount of watermelon they put into the drink. It was not diluted and the flavour was really strong. You can also taste huge chunks of watermelon meat in the drink itself. Very refreshing!

Lychee Lemongrass Freeze // $8 for Small & $15.90 for Large

I didn't know lychee and lemongrass paired so well with one another. The lychee was really sweet and the lemongrass was minty which I really liked alot. You can also find a lychee in the drink!

Fishy Salmon M&C // $ 15.90

Penne Salmon & Fish Roe with Thick Cream Sauce, baked with 3 Cheeses
It was not as jelat as what I thought it would be when it was served on our table. The sauce was really rich and creamy, and it paired so well with the melted cheese and macaroni. The fish roe further adds flavour to the entire dish. The salad on the side was really well-dressed, and you can use that to clean your palette if you feel jelat from all the mac & cheese. Very satisfying!

Peppery Duck // $13.90

Pepper Mayo, Tobiko, Mixed Greens, Authentic Black Pepper Sauce and Black Pepper Duck
Their flatbreads are still as amazing as the last time I had them. So crunchy and not too floury! The duck was well-marinated and tender (literally melts in my mouth). The mixed greens were fresh, crunchy and well-dressed. Overall, this was definitely my favourite dish out of all! So good and addictive!

Butter Bunny // $13.90
Grilled Butter Buns, Chicken Cutlet, Smoked Pepper Duck, Ham & Cheese, Unsalted Butter, Lettuce, Onions & Tomato
Who doesn't like mini sliders? These sliders were not too bad. My favourite was the Chicken Cutlet because the chicken was really tender and well-marinated. The Smoked Pepper Duck was not too bad, similar to the Peppery Duck. The Ham & Cheese did not stand out as much as the rest. One thing to improve would probably be the grilled butter buns which I thought was a little dry.

Baguette Balls // $9.50

6 Minature Baguette, Creamy Minced Chicken with Melted Cheese
P/s: You got to eat this while it's hot! I didn't and the balls were really very hard and tough for me to chew because I took a while to eat it. It would have been so delicious if I ate it while it was hot. The creamy minced chicken and melted cheese were not jelat at all.

Specialty Desserts (Chocolate Lava Cake) // $11.90
This dessert is to die for. The chocolate lava cake was so soft and spongy. The chocolate flavour was rich and strong but not too overpowering. Paired with the vanilla ice cream, it is simply heavenly. A must order if you are at fArt tArtz!

Big Street: New Supper Place that Opens from 11am to 3am

Big Street...

No idea where to have supper? Or sick of the old supper places? Fear not, supper will never be the same again, especially with the recent opening of Big Street at Jalan Besar. With them being featured on the Smart Local not long ago, Big Street saw a huge surge in their popularity, in particular their highly raved-about Salted Egg Prata. Long queues were seen forming outside their restaurant and many were willing to wait.

Housed along the shophouses at Jalan Besar, Big Street is one new hipster air-conditioned supper place that serves local and fusion food, and perhaps an alternative to Swee Choon. Opened from 11am to 3am daily except on Monday, there’s no need for you to crack your mind on where to get your supper cravings satisfied during the wee hours.

Big Street also serves alcoholic drinks but their license is only up till 12am.

Salted Egg Prata // $6.80

The highly raved-about Salted Egg Prata that everyone is talking about. Portion was really small, definitely not sufficient if you are looking at a heavy supper, but good if you just want a light bite. The salted egg sauce was really delicious, very rich and creamy, and they are very generous in the amount of salted egg sauce infused into the prata. The salted egg sauce really paired well with the prata. They also gave a strawberry to cleanse your palette, especially if the jelatness gets into you, and it also balances out the savoury aspect of the entire dish.

The downside would probably be the waiting time. I waited about 25 minutes before the prata was served onto my table. Not advisable to only order this if you are feeling very hungry that day. If not, it is a must-try!

Prata Roll (Mutton) // $12

Honestly speaking, it is really very expensive as compared to the other prata shops outside, just by comparing the small portion they served here at Big Street. But I guess I'm also paying for the ambiance and the service. The place is well-ventilated, air-conditioned and provides free Wifi.

The Mutton roll was not too bad. Wasn't very dry and the meat was quite tender. The salad was probably the one that caught my attention. It was really well-dressed and the vegetables were really fresh and crunchy. If you are on a diet but still wants to satisfy your supper cravings, then by all means, just eat the salads only. You won't regret!

I also ordered their signature Iced Teh Tarik but it was abit too diluted for me. Would recommend to get their teas instead! But okay, the view and company made up for it.

Entrance & First Level

The interior design of Big Street gives off a very cosy and comfortable vibe!

Second Level

Overall, it was quite a good experience at Big Street. So is it an alternative to Swee Choon, I'll let you guys decide because I went to Swee Choon shortly after finishing my supper at Big Street. Not because it wasn't good but because I wasn't really full!

STREET 50 Restaurant & Bar: Great Singapore Savour Menu that Guarantees Cheap and Delicious Local Delights

STREET 50 Restaurant & Bar: Great Singapore Savour...

The team behind STREET 50 Restaurant & Bar has done it again! Perfectly timed with GSS, Bay Hotel's STREET 50 Restaurant & Bar is rolling out Great Singapore Savour where the brand new all-day dining menu is here to impress and perhaps have already win the hearts of many. Accentuating favourite local street food, with amazing twists and styles, and well-presented in palatable small plates, there is a wallet-friendly, shareworthy selection of about 20 (street-)smart treats priced from $7.90 to $12.90. With such cheap trills, you definitely have to bring your families and friends to STREET 50 to enjoy a wide array of local Street Eats that will bound to tantalise your taste buds.

Salted Egg Lava Chicken Breast // $9.90

The salted egg craze hasn't seem to die down yet! New Malaysian Chef Kelvin's signature rendition of chicken breast encased with his homemade salted egg yolk paste is simply amazing! The chicken was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside! The salted egg yolk, on the other hand, was fragrant, rich and creamy. There wasn't a tinge of jelatness but it was really addictive! It's also a visual treat when you enjoy the sight of salted egg lava trickling down the tender chicken meat roll. Definitely a must-order!

Soft Shell Crab with Salted Egg Dip // $7.90

Another salted egg inspired dish at STREET 50! The soft shell crab was not too bad, quite crispy but I thought there were some parts that were a bit too soggy for me! The salted egg cream was yet again impressive, especially its consistency. It was rich, creamy and flavoursome, further brought out the flavour of the crab! This dish really makes a good bar snack!

Cereal Prawns with Wasabi Dressing // $9.90

I was really excited when they told me I was going to try this because I'm a huge fan of Cereal Prawns and Wasabi. Thankfully, it did not turn out to be a flop and left me disappointed. The prawns were fresh, lightly battered with mild sweet and savoury flavours, leaving no greasy aftertaste. The cereal were well-fried, fragrant and it was not too spicy. Paired with the Wasabi dressing, this dish is what I called "Heavenly!"

Coffee Wings // $7.90

This deep-fried chicken mid joints with chef's homemade Hong Kong style coffee jam, is believed to be the first in Singapore and only available at STREET 50. While coffee connoisseurs will agree that the aroma of coffee elicits good feelings whichever way, this unlikely combination, where the smoky nuances of coffee balances the savoury sweet coating on the chicken wings, is a surprisingly finger-licking good dish for the non-coffee drinkers. Overall, this dish makes a good appetiser!

Shrimp and Egg Plant Sambal // $8.90

This dish is simple but has already captured my heart! The sambal sauce is to die for - it was so fragrant and really goes very well with the brinjals! It was also not too spicy! The brinjals, on the other hand, was tender and not too soggy. The prawns were fresh and crunchy! Adding ikan bilis into the dish further brings out the flavour and texture of the entire dish! Definitely one of my favourite dish at STREET 50!

Oyster Char Kway Teow // $12.90

I guess this is one dish that all Singaporeans are familiar with! STREET 50's rendition of this Oyster Char Kway Teow was not too bad. I could taste the wok hei but I thought more of the oyster sauce could be added to bring out the flavour of the entire dish! The oysters and prawns were fresh and there were really very generous in the serving!

X.O. Scallop & Prawns Fried Rice // $9.90

This dish is wok-fried with generous servings of prawns and scallops and masterfully wrapped in Japanese-style omelette, served omu style. The rice was fragrant and delicious but I thought the omelette was not as nice as the ones we have at a Japanese restaurant. The omelette could be a bit softer and tender!

Claypot Assam Fish Head // $18.90

What! Only $18.90? You must be kidding me! STREET 50 spoils the market by selling their big and delicious Fish Head at only $18.90! The assam base was really good, reminded me of the ones I had in Malaysian. So appetising! The fish was also fresh and tender! Probably the highlight of STREET 50's GSS menu!

Curry Fish Head // $18.90

If you dislike Assam, then the Curry based Fish Head will definitely make your eyes pop! The flavour is strong but not too overempowering! I could easily finish three bowls of rice just by drizzling the curry sauce on my rice!

Dine up to $50 to enjoy complimentary Fresh Coconut Malibu (Fresh young coconut juice with parisienne of mixed fruits, topped with coconut ice cream and served with fresh coconut juice, worth $8.90) and stand a chance to win, during the GSS period from now till 14 August 2016:

Mookata (Bugis): Singapore’s Pioneer Traditional Thai BBQ with All-New Cheesy Grill Sets

Mookata...

"Innovation is the key to success." - The Times

In order to differentiate themselves from the rest as well as to further tantalise the taste buds of Mookata lovers, the leading and pioneer restaurant chain for Traditional Thai BBQ introduces its all-new creation that sets to delight even the toughest of foodies – the Mookata Cheesy Grill sets (which I presume they got their inspiration from the famous James Cheese Back Ribs in Korea), available exclusively at the Bugis Junction outlet from 1st June 2016 onwards.

Served in either a set for 2 to 3 person at 57.90 ++ or for 3-4 persons at $64.90 ++, Mookata continues to retain its pocket-friendly prices for premium ingredients and seasonings, which also include brand new additions to the menu such as Baby Back Pork Ribs and Purple Scallops.

With a decent array of food choices such as Pork Collar, Chicken Thigh, Bacon Enoki Wraps, Bratwurst Sausages, Bak Kwa and Kernel Corn to choose from, Mookata is one great place to unwind after a hard day of work or even a simple catch up with your families and friends.

Loaded with creamy mozzarella and cheddar cheese (which I combine both and mix them together)oozing through the troughs of the traditional Mookata grill, foodies can exercise their creativity by choosing which food item pairs the best with the cheese.

My favourites were definitely the Cray Fish, Bak Kwa, Bacon Enoki Wraps and the Bratwurst Sausages and of course, the melted cheese enhance the flavour and taste of each food item!

Look at that oozing cheese mixed with Kernel corn! But I gotta admit, it was not easy to cook the cheese! I had a hard time at the beginning because the cheese was either too burnt or too fried. It was so difficult to achieve that melted consistency throughout our entire Mookata experience.

I also had a hard time cooking the Baby Back Pork Ribs because it is taking forever to be cooked. I gave up in the end because it was really taking too long. If you are a Mookata expert, or have a friend who can cook Mookata very well, by all means order the ribs. But if you can't, I would advice you to skip the ribs and order other food. Cooking the Purple Scallops were also not easy at all, I had to dig the scallop out of the shell to cook it but it always turned out to be so burnt. I gave up along the way! But the other food item was still manageable and the melted cheese complemented them very well.

With any order of the Mookata Cheesy Grill set, customers can get a serving of Cray fish (4 pieces) at an unbearable price of $12 ++ for a limited time only. I would get them if I were you because the Cray fish was really fresh and it pairs very well with the melted cheese!

The Cheesy Grill is also available as an add-on for buffet customers at an additional $3.50++ with a free flow of mozzarella and cheddar cheese to complement menu items from the buffet line!

Thank you Mookata, Serynn and Affluence PR for the invitation.

Ollella Singapore: The Prettiest and Tastiest Chouquette in Singapore

Ollella Singapore...

Farrer Park has always been one of my favourite place to café hop. There are so many impressive cafés around the vicinity which keeps me wanting to visit Farrer Park again and again. With Ollella Singapore, a less than 3 months old café being added into the café list at Farrer Park, I can foresee even more people flocking to this area to get their café hopping fix.

Started by two passionate Indonesian sisters, Ollyvia Putri, the Pastry Chef who has worked under world renowned American and French chefs during her time in Chicago and Paris despite her tender age of 24) and Marcella Putri who heads Ollella’s business development, brings along her decade of sales and marketing experience from her corporate background into the business, Ollella is the amalgamation of western influences that the sisters are exposed to growing up outside of their home country and their Indonesian heritage instilled in them as they shadow their grandmother in creating delicious Indonesian delicacies. The idea of incorporating both the elements from the East and West into their cake shop is something to be really proud of, which I believe their grandmother would also be.

Located at Petain Road, Ollella Singapore is a cosy and dainty café that offers colourful Choux pastries which are delicious and addictive at a reasonable price. Also, all the other cafés in the vicinity should watch out, Ollella is a force to be reckoned with.

Aren't these Choux pastries colourful and pretty? It is already very pleasing to the eyes!

Mini Choux Platter // $24

If you are undecisive and fickle-minded like me, I would suggest that you go for their Mini Choux Platter which consists of Vanilla, Apple Cinnamon, Raspberry, Rose (Month of May), Lemon Meringue, Matcha Azuki, Dark Chocolate and Tiramisu, all reasonably priced between $4 and $5 each (The individual ones are bigger). This Mini Choux Platter is also a good gift for any birthdays or festive occasion. The packaging is well designed and well thought of.

P/s: Ollella introduces newly flavoured Choux pastry into their menu monthly. So for the month of June, you can expect to have Boozy Brownie Sundae instead of the Rose which was only available in May.

Some of you might wonder now, what are Choux pastries?

Choux pastry or pâte à choux, is a light pastry dough made of butter, water, flour and eggs, it is most recognized in the form of cream puffs or eclairs. Chouquette by OLLELLA, elevates the traditional cream puff by adding layers of textures, rich flavours and personality. The sisters wanted to create beautiful, dainty and decadent dessert that are sweet and indulgent yet light enough to enjoy several pieces without feeling overly cloying.

The Choux pastries are addictive and crunchy, and the flavours are well-balanced. Each flavours are uniquely different and you are bound to be surprised going down the line (Vanilla, Apple Cinnamon, Raspberry, Rose, Lemon Meringue, Matcha Azuki, Dark Chocolate and Tiramisu).

My favourites were the Dark Chocolate and Matcha Azuki (I'm a huge fan of Matcha).
The Matcha Azuki was really good, particularly the subtle bitter aftertaste which I really liked. It reminded me of the Matcha I had when I was in Japan. On the other hand, the Dark Chocolate was not too bitter or sweet, and it was really rich. If you like strong flavours, then go for the Dark Chocolate or the Matcha Azuki Choquette.

Besides their delicious Choux pastries, Ollella also offers really delectable Kueh Lapis which is only available on the weekends. If you want to have some authentic Indonesian Kueh Lapis, then you have to make your weekends free.

The Kueh Lapis is a 60 years old recipe passed down from their grandmother, which is different from the ones we usually have. The flavour is stronger! Thank you Ollella, Ollyvia and Marcella for having me! I will definitely be back again to try your savoury Choux pastries!
