Junction 8...

With Mother’s Day drawing near, most people would now be wrecking their brains on where and how to celebrate the special occasion with their mum. It can either be an easy task or one that falls under the extreme spectrum. Personally, planning a Mother’s Day surprise can get a little tough for me as it is so difficult to get my mum out of the house. She is thrifty, doesn’t likes to travel far, and she is very picky about her food. The only option I have is probably bringing her to a nearby shopping mall. Not the best choice but shopping malls are very accessible and convenient. They also offer a variety of food choices as well as Mother’s Day promotions which you will bound to find one that fits your mum’s expectations and palette.

Junction 8 has always been a frequent hangout mall for my family. It is near our house (very accessible since there’s the red & circle line) and you can pretty much get everything you need there. No wonder they are so popular among the young and the old (very crowded even during the weekdays). So, if you have yet to plan a Mother's Day surprise, why not head to Junction 8 to get some inspiration? They have attractive Mother's Day promotions as well as new dining enclaves. I'll be sharing 5 of their F&B outlets in my blog and most of them written from my mum's perspective & feedback (since this is her special day).

Planning a Mother’s Day surprise isn’t that hard afterall! There’s so much things to do at Junction 8!

Saybons
If you and your mum belongs to the health conscious category, then Saybons might be the ideal place to celebrate Mother’s Day. Known for their affordable, accessible and wholesome French cuisine, Saybons has recently expanded their space at Junction 8 so as to cater to more family dining at their area. Besides serving their signature soups, salads and crepes, they have also added a new All-Day Breakfast & Mains column into their menu, providing more food options for their customers. To celebrate Mother's Day this year, they have launched a special 4 course meal where you get to choose a soup of your own choice, a portion of the Garlic Escargots or Salad, a Risotto of your choice and a dessert crepe of your own choice at only $35. The portion was definitely more than filling and it is really very value-for-money!

We tried a variety of their soups and unanimously agreed that our favourites were the Seafood Bisque, Mushroom and Tomato. The Seafood Bisque was rich, creamy and flavourful – It felt very similar to a Lobster Bisque. The Mushroom soup was not too bad – rich, fragrant and not jelat. The Tomato Soup is a must try! Not only is Tomato soup hard to find in Singapore, it’s rare to even find a place that serves really good Tomato soup. The one at Saybons caught all of us by surprise (my mum included) and it was very appetizing. It was very comforting as well!

Like what its name suggests, the escargots have a strong garlic flavour which covered its game smell. Also, it comes with a basket of bread. The way to eat this: Dip the bread into the rich garlic sauce and eat it with the escargot!

The Mushroom Risotto was rich, flavourful and not too watery. It was also not heavy. My mum loves this. The shredded chicken wasn’t dry as well.

The photo doesn’t do the Nutella Banana Crepe any justice. I love the texture of the crepe but remember eat it while it’s hot! Best way to end off the Mother's Day meal!

Maki-San
Maki-San has been very popular since it was first opened at The Cathay. In a quick span of a few years, they have opened quite a number of branches all over Singapore. They now have an outlet at Junction 8 which was opened not too long ago and the amount of people queuing is insane. As the shop is really small, you can see armies of people standing outside waiting for their food. If you haven’t heard about Maki-San (which I hardly doubt so), Maki-San allows you to create your very own sushi instantly. All you have to do is to fill up a form that indicates your preferences, submit the form to the staff, and your DIY Maki will be out in no time! To cater to the fried food-lovers like me, they have the Fried Maki which was so delicious!

My mum created this sushi according to her preferences. If you are lazy to create your own, they do have House Sushi (which is available on their menu board and it comes with descriptions) for you to order from. But I would strongly recommend you to go for the DIY because it will be a good first time experience for your mum! My mum was quite excited when she knows that she could choose the toppings for her sushi!

Besides creating your own Maki, you can also create your own salad bowl. It is very easy and convenient. By the way, the salad was huge. Definitely shareable between two people!

The new Fried Maki roll which I mentioned earlier. We (my mum, brother and I) love it! It was super crunchy and definitely went well with the toppings we choose for our Maki. Super addictive but I was full after having three of it! A must-order!

Häagen-Dazs

Best known for its premium ice cream and cakes, Häagen-Dazs has been a favourite spot for families at Junction 8. Even during the weekdays, you can see families crowding their place for ice cream. It’s hard to get a seat most of the time! To celebrate Mother’s Day, Häagen-Dazs has come out with a Mother’s day special cake – Blushing Heart which is a refreshing Strawberry Ice Cream Cake dressed in a lovely pink shades of fresh cream and decorated with strawberries. From May 1st to May 31st, you can purchase the Blushing Heart (which is only available at Junction 8) at a 10% discounted price. Please place an order 3 days in advance (exclusive of weekend) via your visit or phone call at Junction 8 Häagen-Dazs outlet. This will be a good surprise and gift for your mum!

Isn’t this Ice Cream Cake very pretty? I bet your mum will love it. Don’t worry, it is not overly sweet!

You can also chill there with a cup of tea or coffee and spend some quality time with your family!

Dian Xiao Er
Honestly, nothing can go wrong when you dine at Dian Xiao Er! Awarded by Epicurean as the Best Chinese Restaurant in Singapore, Dian Xiao Er has never failed to impress with their delicate way of preparing and cooking their dishes. Also, the very rustic and oriental design of the restaurant just makes the whole dining experience very memorable. If your mum belongs to the more traditional Asian category, she will definitely fall for the food at Dian Xiao Er. My mum is one good example. Her eyes sparkled when she found out that she was heading there to try out some of their signature dishes as well as the Mother’s Day Special. It was
her first time there and she can’t stop singing praises after having for the food at Dian Xiao Er. So, for this Mother’s Day, Dian Xiao Er has whipped out a new dish – Cantonese-styled Steamed Silver Cod Fish.

This was the highlight of the day. The cod fish was super soft that it literally melts in the mouth. Love the rich and buttery gravy made entirely out of beancurd. This dish is very healthy because of the rich dose of omega-3 fatty acids from the cod which is good for the heart. My mum enjoyed it a lot.

The Tender Crisp Chicken with Sweet Garlic was not jelat sweet, definitely goes very well with a bowl of rice. Oh yah! Before I forget, my mum asked for a bowl of rice to go with the food at Dian Xiao Er even though she was full.

We were all looking forward to the highly raved-about Signature Herbal Roast Duck from Dian Xiao Er and it didn’t disappoint. The duck was well-marinated and roasted, meat was super tender and juicy. My favourite was the crispy skin. A must-order!

*Dishes are exclusive with order of Mother’s Day Set Menu, priced from $88++ for 3 pax onwards. Menu would be available from 28 April to 14 May 2017.

Tuk Tuk Cha
Tuk Tuk Cha is one of my favourite hangout place for Thai Milk Tea & Shibuya Toasts. When I was still working at Suntec, I would always head to Tuk Tuk Cha to get their Thai Green Milk Tea as well as their Shibuya Toast to satisfy my sweet tooth. Now, they have ventured out to serving a wide range of Thai noodles as well and they are equally good as the desserts. Again, it is so hard to find a seat at their outlet at Junction 8 because even at 3pm, they are fully filled!

My favourite drinks at Tuk Tuk Cha!

The Northern Tom Yum Noodle reminded me of the noodles I had in Thailand. The sour-spicy flavour opens up my appetite and I couldn’t stop drinking the broth. The noodles were springy and the seafood were very fresh. I can’t wait to come back for more!

The Yen Tau Foo Dry was similar to the ones we have in Singapore but this was more Thai-inspired. The flavour was more of a sour-sweet than the usual sweet we have in Singapore. They were very generous with the side ingredients they put in the noodle. Very value-for-money!

This Golden Toast with Condensed Milk + Milo was so sinful but it was worth gaining that calories. The amount of condensed milk and milo they drizzled on top of the toast was insane. You need a drink to go with this. It can get a little dry towards the end!

Waffles were not too bad. The highlight should be the Green Tea Ice Cream which was rich and fragrant!

Since my mum is a very fussy eater and she don't really like to travel out to eat, I was happy to see her smile when she ate the newly launched Thai Milk Tea Shibuya Toast. The ice cream was rich and creamy while the toast is super soft. Also, the cookie crumble complemented the toast very well. It was not jelat sweet.
