Pope Jai Thai: Social Enterprise with Authentic, Affordable & Mouth-Watering Thai Dishes Opens Second Outlet at Scape

Pope Jai Thai...

Pope Jai Thai is the first local F&B business to employ underprivileged people with physical and intellectual disabilities. Working very closely with SGenable, Daniel Teh, owner of Pope Jai Thai, strongly believes in inclusive hiring, providing a platform for the disabled to feed themselves. Such a selfless act is truly admirable!

I was given the opportunity to have a walk-through in the kitchen, experiencing the whole operation process as well as an understanding on how Daniel trains his people. There are simple innovations, detailed routines and templates to help trainees learn and adapt to their tasks.

They have recently opened their second outlet at the youthful *SCAPE (just a week ago), hoping to create an awareness among the youths. On top of being a social enterprise, I was pleasantly surprised and very impressed with the Thai dishes served at Pope Jai Thai. They were delicious and very affordable. There is also no GST and service charge. Everything is in nett pricing! What’s more! They are also the first Thai restaurant in Singapore to serve THAI ICE TEA & THAI GREEN TEA TOWER!!!

So, wait no more! Head to *SCAPE and show them your support!

What a sumptuous spread! In frame, Thai Green Curry, Garlic Honey Chicken, Homemade Thai Fish Cake, Grilled Pork Stick, BBQ Pork Collar, Prawn Cracker and Seafood Pad Thai.

Thai Iced Tea Tower
My god! I couldn’t stop myself from keep drinking it. Freshly brewed from the tea leaves imported from Thailand, this Iced Thai Tea is refreshing and very soothing! I can replaced this with beer!

Garlic Honey Chicken // $12
The chicken was well-marinated, crispy and has a subtle tangy flavour. It wasn't dry and tough as well. They were very generous with the servings, definitely good for 2-3 people. It was really addictive!

Homemade Thai Prawn Cake (3Pcs) // $8.80
I was shocked (in a good way) when I bite the prawn cake. Within the crispy batter lies a soft and flavourful minced prawn fillings which was very pleasurable to the taste bud. Dip it into the Thai chilli sauce for maximum pleasure! 3 is definitely not enough!

Thai Green Curry (Chicken) // $9
The Green Curry at Pope Jai Thai is richer and thicker than the ones you usually find elsewhere. It was also very aromatic. Give me a bowl of rice. I only need the green curry sauce!

BBQ Pork Collar // $15
The pork collar was well-marinated, flavourful and not too tough. How to eat this? Pair it with onion and the in-house savoury sauce!

Seafood Phad Thai // $8.80
Phad thai was fragrantly stir-fried, served with a generous portion of seafood. The flavour was well-balanced, not overly sweet.

Grilled Pork Stick (2 Pcs) // $6
Again, the pork was well-marinated, tender and juicy. My favourite was the fatty part which was damn chewy.

Mango Sticky Rice // $6.80
Mango was fresh and sweet, and the coconut flavour on the sticky rice was extremely fragrant. What a way to complete my meal!

Red Ruby // $5
With everything made in-house, this red ruby is a life-saver when the weather in Singapore is always burning hot. Very refreshing!

Common Chefs: The Pocket-Friendly Café at Sembawang Returns with Brand New Menu

Common Chefs...

Still remember Common Chefs? The pocket-friendly café at Sembawang is back with a brand new menu, and they are even better than before. You can expect to see new savoury waffles, flavourful taco dishes as well as Instagram-ready burgers and the best part, they are all extremely affordable. With nothing above $18 and in nett pricing, the portion of the dishes at Common Chefs are relatively huge as well. So, mark your calendar because the trip down to Common Chefs is so damn worth it!

Here’s a collage of some of the new dishes at Common Chefs! P/s: Give them a call to make reservation because they are so packed during the weekends!

Affogato // $6.50
When you are craving for coffee and ice cream at the same time. The affogato was well-balanced, with a subtle bitterness from the espresso and a subtle sweetness from the vanilla ice cream. Dip the sweet biscuits into the espresso-ice cream mix for maximum pleasure. A good way to start the weekends!

Chocolate Milkshake // $8
Come on, it’s the weekends! Reward yourself with a sinful cup of milkshake! It is totally worth it if the milkshake is good! The chocolate milkshake at Common Chefs didn’t disappoint, with a strong chocolate flavour that is not too overpowering. You can expect a strong milky taste as well.

Okonomiyaki Wazza // $11
Common Chef’s rendition of the Okonomiyaki waffle was impressive. Hiding under the massive pile of Bonito flakes lies a soft and fluffy buttermilk waffle. Oh before I forget, there is also a fluffy tomago on top of the waffle. The combination was deadly addictive which got me bite after bite. Also, I am surprised by how affordable it is! Priced at only $11, the portion is insane! Highly recommended!

Full Breakfast Wazza // $12
Big Breakfast but served with a waffle. If you need a hearty brekkie, then you should go for this! Egg was super runny (one gentle slice and the egg yolk immediately flows), bacon was well-marinated and the mushrooms were well-sautéed. Again, the waffle was fragrant and fluffy. This is worth every penny you are paying!

Fish Goujons // $12
What! They even have Mexican dishes now? The fish was well-battered, still relatively crispy even though I left it on the table for quite a while and it paired very well with the other condiments, especially the mesclun salad, tomato and black raisins. This dish was very pleasurable to the taste bud.

Grilled Prawns // $12
Similar to the Fish Goujons Taco, the Grilled Prawns are targeted against seafood-lovers! Prawns were well-seasoned with paprika and are extremely crunchy!

Rich Man // $16
Only available during the weekends, the Rich Man is for people who loves strong, salty and cheesy flavour. The patty was fragrant, tender and juicy but it was a tad salty for me. Probably need to eat with the buns to minimise the saltiness. I am so happy that the burger comes with their popular Truffle Tatter Tots which I was raving about when they were first opened. So glad that the standard is still maintained! You must order this!

Apple-Strudel Cake
If you have been reading my blog post on Common Chefs a year ago, you will know that the owner, Joanna is very good in baking. So, you can expect to see a range of cakes, tarts and macarons at Common Chefs. They are really yummy. She do customisation for cakes as well. Ring them up if you are looking for one!

The Reading Room...

Do you love to read and eat? I mean, who doesn’t? You can enjoy both reading and eating at The Reading Room, a hidden gem along Bukit Pasoh road. It’s the perfect spot for you to spend some alone time, treating yourself to a good novel, coffee and food. If you are looking for a quiet and cosy place to chat with your friends, The Reading Room is definitely a good option as well. You can make a reservation at The Reading Room via the Quandoo App! It is super convenient!

I really enjoy the peaceful vibe the café gives. Tried their brunch during the weekends and I must say the food definitely exceeded my expectations. They were simple, not very fanciful but it was comforting. I can see myself chilling in the café for a few hours. You need to check them out!

Iced Matcha Latte // $6.80
Iced Matcha Latte was not too bad. Matcha flavour was strong and the milk was added in proportion to the Matcha powder.

Himalayan Salt Coffee // $5
Not only was the latte art beautiful, the Himalayan Salt Coffee was surprisingly good. The coffee was a combination of sweet, salty and bitter and they were well-balanced, complementing one another very well. Highly recommended! I could totally drink another cup of this!

Deep Fried Mushrooms // $12.80
Mushrooms were well-marinated, well-fried and crispy. The mushrooms were also very juicy. Portion was decent. Dip the crispy mushrooms into the aioli sauce for maximum pleasure!

Buttermilk Pancakes & Fruits // $15.80
Pancakes were soft and fluffy and it paired very well with the fruits, maple syrup and vanilla ice cream. The mint leave added an extra aroma and flavour to the ice cream. Simple but so delicious! My sweet tooth is fixed!

French Toasts & Fruits // $14.80
Again, like the pancakes, the toast was soft and well-toasted. It wasn’t too oily and matched the fruits and ice cream very well. What a life saver under the heat!

Smoked Egg and Herbs / $17.80
As you can see from the picture, the eggs were really on point – super runny. The hollandaise sauce was not too overpowering. Ham was not bad.

W39 Bistro & Bakery: Homely & Cosy Café in the West

W39 Bistro & Bakery...

If you are staying in the West and you’re looking for a quiet and cosy place to have your meal, W39 Bistro & Bakery is the place to go. It is also the perfect spot for you to fix your coffee cravings.

Hidden within Clementi’s private residential area, W39 Bistro & Bakery serves a wide range of modern European cuisine with a local twist at a pocket-friendly price. On top of that, they also have a huge selection of in-house cakes for guests to choose from.

W39 offers simple yet unforgettable dishes. I was relatively impressed with most of their dishes as well as the portion. Definitely value-for-money! A very good place to chill during the weekends!

Coffees here are generally good, not too acidic nor alkaline. They have a good selection of coffees as well.

Kimchi Cocktail // $15
Launched on 1st August, this Kimchi cocktail is unique and surprisingly refreshing. Alcoholic flavour wasn’t as strong as what I have initially expected. Eat the shallots and kimchi first before you drink. It opens up your palette with some spiciness before sweetness hits you when you drink the cocktail. Good combination! A must-try!

Chef's Speciality; Housemade Crab Cakes // $10
The fillings were well-mixed before they were deep-fried. It wasn’t too oily and the crab cakes were crispy and flavourful. Paired with W39 in-house sambal mayo, I can easily finish this all by myself. I would say the sauce is tuned towards sweet-spicy, which means most people can eat this without having to gulp down huge amount of water.

W39 Signature Baked Caesar Salad // $12
One of the few places that serve Casear salad at such an affordable price. Priced at only $12, the portion is considered relatively big. The salad was well-dressed, with generous servings of shrimp and did I not mention about how runny the poached egg was? If you belong to the health-conscious crowd, you might want to get this!

Sake Mussels & Bread // $12
The mussels were fresh and sweet, and has a very subtle sake flavour. Broth was really flavourful. Dip the bread into the broth and eat it together with the mussel to achieve maximum pleasure.

Quinoa Salad // $8
I’m a huge fan of quinoa salad and I’ve got to say this was not too bad. For $8, this is so damn value-for-money. Again, the salad was well-dressed!

Poached Chicken Breast // $20
Simple yet so fulfilling! The chicken breast wasn’t too tough and it goes very well with the Chinese wine cream sauce which was not jelat at all. I liked the mash as well.

Pan-Fried Salmon // $22
This is one of my favourite dish at W39. The salmon skin was so crispy and the meat was a tad melty which kept me going bite after bite. You will also like the flavourful barley and corn risotto. The combination works!

Braised Pork Cheek Quesadilla
This quesadilla dish is deadly addictive! We were fighting for the last piece. The pork was well-braised, soft and tender. Dip into the home-made and my life is complete!

Chef's Special Assam Fish & Tumeric Rice // $16
Would have love it more if the assam was a litter spicier for me. Other than that, the assam was fragrant and flavourful. Oh ya, the assam was more of the sweeter version.

Like what I mentioned at the beginning, you can also get your coffee and sweet tooth cravings fixed at W39. They are running an attractive promotion during tea time! Go check them out!
