Common Chefs...

“My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.” - Maya Angelou

It is always so inspiring to see young and motivated individuals striving towards a common goal together. Common Chefs, a three-month old café, is headed by a group of passionate youngsters (all in their early twenties) with a mutual interest in cooking.

Joanna, the owner of Common Chefs, possesses her culinary skills not only from the school that she attends in but mostly through self-taught by visiting the library and watching various YouTube channels. Her hard work has definitely paid off as she is very proficient in both hot and cold cooking. Besides experimenting new dishes in the kitchen, Joanne also remembers to contribute back to the society by participating in charity events to help the less-privileged.

Located opposite Sembawang Shopping Centre, Common Chefs is a cosy and dainty café that serves a wide range of freshly-made Western cuisines at a very wallet-friendly price. Everything is in Nett! Also, their in-house cakes are one to watch out for. If you are looking for customised cakes, Common Chefs is one place you could probably consider.

In frame, Common Chefs’ Boss Burger, Shepherd's Pie, Soul Food, Truffle Tatter Tots, Matcha Latte, Chocolate Milkshake and their delicious flavoured Macarons.

Truffle Tatter Tots // $12

Deep fried grated potatoes tossed with premium Italian truffle oil served with shaved parmesan slices, and truffle mayo dip.

Holy crap! This was superb and very addictive! First, the truffle smell was so strong and aromatic. My stomach was already growling when the smell hits my nose. The deep fried grated potatoes were so crunchy and crispy, and I couldn’t stop popping it into my mouth. In no time, I almost finished everything, like unconsciously. Another thing worth mentioning is the in-house truffle mayo dip which complements the potatoes very well. The truffle taste also lingers in your mouth for quite a while. Definitely a good snack or appetiser to munch on when you are chatting with a group of friends!

Soul Food // $12

Common Chefs waffle with crispy sauced Cajun fried chicken drizzled over maple.

The waffle is not the usual crispy kind of waffle which I would have better preferred but it was very soft and fluffy. The chicken was not too bad and it was crispy but I thought it was a bit too salty for me. One way to cut down the saltiness would probably be to drizzle some of the maple syrup on the chicken. I tried it and it was good to taste both salty and sweet at the same time!

The Boss // $19

The ultimate Common Chefs burger. Beef patty, caramelised onions, bacon, sautéed mushrooms and egg all sandwiched between buttered brioche bun.

The burger was huge and it looks so appetising! You can choose between beef or chicken patty and I got the beef patty. The beef was tender and juicy. You can see the amount of juice flowing out from the patty when you bite or cut it. It was very well-marinated. The caramelised onions, bacons and egg provided further texture to the whole burger which completes it perfectly. The fries were not too bad but I thought it could be more seasoned. A must try!

Shepherd's Pie // $15

Cottage meat pie on a sheet of homemade mashed potatoes, sautéed mushrooms, caramelised onions, blend of marinated minced pork along with smooth mozzarella cheese.

The baked cheese was so tempting. It was, like the other dishes, very aromatic. Just look at the amount of cheese I pulled out from the Shepherd’s Pie. It’s insane. The minced pork was also very well-marinated and tender. It wasn't jelat as what I thought it was going to be. Oh, one word of advice: You got to share this with two friends because finishing it alone is impossible!

Macarons // $2 per piece

One macaron for only $2? You must be kidding me! With so many flavours to choose from, you will definitely be spoilt for choices! They have flavours such as Kaya, Nutella, Salted Caramel, Vanilla Sprinkles, Bubblegum, Mint Chocolate, White Chocolate, Thai Milk Tea, Thai Green Tea, Earl Grey, Matcha, Gula Melaka & Cookie Butter. I tried the Kaya, Vanilla Sprinkles and Salted Caramel Macaron and they were not too bad. I’m not a big fan of macarons because I always find them very sweet for my liking. The macarons at Common Chefs were not too sweet and not jelat. Definitely worth buying!

Thank you Common Chefs for the great hosting and hospitality. I really enjoyed all the food and thanks for showing me the importance of passion and determination.
